Unicorr Packaging Group Wins Gold Medal in Printing in the 2021 Box Manufacturing Olympics

August 2021Unicorr Packaging Group was among the gold medal recipients at the first-ever Box Manufacturing Olympics, sponsored by TAPPI and AICC at SuperCorrExpo2021 in Orlando, FL, August 8-12. Unicorr received the first place honor for line work in the Flexo Print on Combined Board category for its package printing of video game controllers manufactured by Aim Controllers.

“Aim Controllers wanted to be able to replicate their more expensive litho label print without a perceived quality loss, and we succeeded with accomplishing that through the expanded capabilities we now have with the addition of our Göpfert press,” said Gary Lenkeit, Corporate Creative Director at Unicorr Packaging Group. “We credit our design and production team for their inventiveness and Aim Controller’s willingness to experiment with us in the creation of this unique printing of their product packaging, which was a spot gloss print treatment that is common in litho but rare in flexo.”

Since the Aim Controllers packaging graphics were designed with line art based graphics, Unicorr was able to utilize the Göpfert’s extra print stations to realize the spot gloss effect. They printed the three base colors, then added the two clear coatings, first applying the matte finish and then the spot of gloss highlighting the Aim Controllers logo to almost litho-like quality.

TAPPI’s CorrPak Competition and AICC’s Package Design Competition joined together this year to create the new competition, which was open to all TAPPI and AICC members from around the world who produce corrugated, rigid box and folding cartons, as well as their suppliers. The competition received an unprecedented 173 entries, which were evaluated on a number of criteria, such as design, quality, graphic excellence, technical difficulty and innovative application
